T Cells

T cells constitute a diverse population of lymphocytes that develop in the bone marrow and mature in the thymus. All T cells express a heterodimeric T cell receptor (TCR) on their surface that consists of alpha/beta or gamma/delta protein dimers. The TCR confers antigen specificity to the T cell and is essential for their role in the adaptive immune response and the generation of antigen specific T cell memory. T cells are classified by virtue of their function in the immune system as helper/effector T cells, cytotoxic T cells, regulatory T cells or gamma/delta T cells.
