Cell Cycle and Proliferation

The cell cycle is a strictly controlled process of ordered events that can be categorized into four distinct phases: G1 (Gap1), S (Synthesis), G2 (Gap 2), and M (Mitosis). The result of ordered progression through each stage is division of the original parent cell into two genetically identical daughter cells. Understanding the mechanisms which regulate this process is critical as the result of uncontrolled cell proliferation is tumourigenesis. Reagents and assays designed to characterize these events are important for both cell biology and tumor biology.
